How does the Blue Mountain Coffee taste?
Highly valued by coffee connoisseurs around the world, it has a unique chocolaty aroma and a mild nutty flavor. It has a balanced sweetness and acidity. 100% natural roast. This coffee has a special personality. Its aroma is intense with floral notes. Its texture is smooth and creamy. Its taste has medium, pleasant acidity, medium, delicate body and practically no bitterness. Therefore it is a sweet coffee with notes of dried fruits such as nuts, cocoa and spices that harmonize with each other. This makes for a rich coffee.
How is this Jamaican coffee made?
The process begins with cultivation. Jamaica uses a natural production system, using organic fertilizers, and harvesting or picking the cherries is entirely manual. This is due to the orography of the terrain, which is very uneven and does not allow the use of machines. Only the ripe beans are harvested, which ensures the quality of the coffee in the cup.
After the extraction of the coffee beans, which are dried in the sun, they are sorted by size, eliminating those with defects. As with the harvest, the sorting is done by hand and requires a lot of skill from the pickers. One of the characteristics of this coffee is its characteristic bluish-green color in the raw state.
The cupping of the coffee is carried out precisely by the competent authority. It consists of an initial assessment of the green and roast coffee beans. Cupping is done anonymously, meaning without knowing which farm or processor the coffee came from, and a detailed evaluation questionnaire is filled out. This ensures impartiality, because regardless of the reputation of the producer or processor, a coffee that does not meet quality standards will be rejected.
Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is known to be packaged in white wooden barrels that prevent the beans from being contaminated by outside smells and flavors.
Why is Blue Mountain coffee priced so high?
The low production leads to a high original price. In our opinion, there are three other factors: on the one hand, the peculiarities of the production process, on the other hand, the thorough quality control that this coffee undergoes, and last but not least, the great qualities that this complete and balanced coffee possesses.
With regard to the production process, it should be noted that due to the location of the coffee trees, it is practically manual and without machine support. The coffee trees are located in the heart of the mountains, surrounded by steep and slippery slopes due to the climate, which means that the coffee harvest workers take a great risk. In short, tending and harvesting the plants is tedious and dangerous.
On the other hand, as we have seen, the quality control is demanding and thorough, adding value to the product.
Preparation tips
You have different ways to prepare this coffee. As we have recommended on other occasions, filter or drip coffee makers, Italian coffee makers (aka moka coffee makers) and espresso coffee makers are all interesting. Since coffee is known to be a matter of taste, you should choose the variant that allows you to emphasize the qualities that interest you most in your coffee. For high-quality coffees, such as B. JBM, however, we recommend the filter or drip coffee machine, as it is able to bring out more aromatic and taste nuances. Remember that in any case it is very important to set the product's grind level correctly and only grind the amount that you really need. Finally, remember to use bottled or filtered mineral water to avoid transferring unpleasant smells and flavors to the infusion.
